Hip Flexor Release, Move Within Yoga #28

6/22/2020

I had a query on hip flexors, a group of muscles running through the pelvis that includes one of  my favorites, the psoas. They help us do the most basic of movements like walking and forward bends, not to mention twists - but that's another topic for another day. The moves here are geared toward improving our forward bends - our ability to do them, our ease and grace when doing them as part of a workout or just in everyday life.

The exercises here are geared toward beginners who are mobile: can get on and off the floor, and have some balance and strength. The forward bends here are modified for people with a host of ailments or strains. Please consult a medical professional before trying these or any other fitness regime.

The psoas muscle is a juicy muscle that needs a lot of tender care when exercising. Allow the breath to soften, especially in any holding pose. I have a few free-breath videos to walk you through this technique so please check those out.

Please check out my latest blog, a reflection in our eclipse season on the cusp between two different worlds entirely. Blue Jeans Blog is the name of my writings.

My live Zoom classes will be wrapping up for summer, but if you'd like to stay posted on future classes, please email me at movewithinyoga@gmail about this or any other questions, feedback or comments.

If you'd like to do a karmic or energy exchange, please consider subscribing and sharing, or a donation toward the cost of production : https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=9K4YTKN2YAXXC&source=url

Baby Camel, Move Within Yoga #27

6/15/2020

PictureBaby Camel, palms against backs of thighs
If it seems daunting to do camel and get your hands all the way back to your ankles, then work on Baby Camel (see pic).

In this video, I teach you how to do a series of poses that prep the body for the full camel pose as well as the alternative baby version. The prep poses like full arm circle as well as the end pose continue to help me open up my chest, release my shoulders, strengthen my shoulder girdle and soften tension in my neck. It's a lovely flow too for your arms and hands.

On a psychological level, it's a great mood booster. On a character trait level, it improves your work ethic.

For live Zoom classes, please email me at movewithinyoga@gmail.com or please subscribe to my channel where you can check out more than 25 videos on everything from breathing exercises to full 45-minute sequences.

If you found this of value and would like to do a Karmic exchange, sharing is caring! Word-of-mouth counts as major support, as does any sharing through social mediums. Producer credits will be given for future shows and count as a skill. This is a scaled down version of what Hollywood producers do: help build content through support.

Financial donations towards the cost of production can be given through PayPal and are much appreciated: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=9K4YTKN2YAXXC&source=url

Free-Breath Exercise 2 for Inner Peace, Move Within Yoga Video #26

6/11/2020

My second breathing video in my Free-Breath series continues to explore this technique for inner peace. If you're feeling angry or hostile, you can transform that energy into peace -- peace within YOU. "Let there be peace on Earth/And let it begin with me" - anyone else remember that tune?

And like all these free-breath exercises, there are no rituals, no mantras, no chanting and no positive thinking required!

The only requirement is observation. When you bring your observation to the breath, transformation happens. Observation means seeing without judgment.

In the words Mona Miller, knowing how "to see yourself without judgment, control or fixing is crucial before seeing and speaking with others. We still have a free-will to 'see' ourselves in others and admit whether something is our issue or not."

If you found this or any of my videos of value and like to do a Karmic exchange, sharing is caring! Word-of-mouth counts as major support, as does any sharing. Financial donations towards the cost of production can be given through PayPal and are much appreciated: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=9K4YTKN2YAXXC&source=url

Free-Breath Exercise 1, Move Within Yoga video #25

5/29/2020

This is our first video about free-breath, a breathing exercise that transforms your being into a state of calmness.

No mantras and no "positive thinking" are required.

Just bring your powers of observation, find a place to sit, and be open to turning nervousness, frantic behavior or fright into calmness.

At a time when mental health is an issue for so many, I am hoping that this may help even a few people manage their emotions and energies during this period of dislocation and transition.

Thank you for being here. You are essential! Please subscribe, like, and share for more breathing exercise and at-home movement instruction in the art of yoga. For live Zoom classes, please contact me at movewithinyoga@gmail for more details. Thank you again! Stephanie xo

Attentiveness in Cobra, Move Within Video 23

5/18/2020

When we bring attentiveness into cobra we notice a transition from limitation to openness.

It's a sign of the times: with most of the world's population still in lock-down of some form or another, most of us are feeling restraint or constriction. It's unavoidable.

But even in this atmosphere there is room to open, room to increase our perspective and room to receive - it just might not come in ways we expect and might require now more attentiveness and awareness from us. We're not on autopilot anymore!

In this video, we prep the upper chest, forearms and elbows for cobra in a gentle series of repetitions. We start lifting up with baby cobra and then gradually increase our lift to upward dog. Don't strain the shoulders "trying" to get higher. The spine is ultimately doing the heavy lifting.

For live instruction, I'm holding group Zoom classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and private classes on Mondays and Fridays. For more information, email me at movewithinyoga@gmail.com.

For producer credits, please consider sharing, commenting or subscribing. If you find any of this of value, please consider support in the form of word-of-mouth (WOM) or financial donation through PayPal: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=9K4YTKN2YAXXC&source=url

Balancing Acts, The Crow - Move Within Yoga Video #22

5/15/2020

I know times are hard and stressful, but all the more reason for just a tiny silver of fun. We need to find the fun whenever it turns up, no matter how trivial.

This pose is fun and isn't as hard as it looks. Crow is more a balancing act than anything with the heart center extending out to balance out the tush behind. Your internal eye or inner vision needs to be switched on to gauge the position and balance of your different body parts.

We warm up with a few balancing poses like tree and tippy-toe position to prepare. I'm holding live Zoom yoga classes so if you're interested drop me an email for details at movewithinyoga@gmail.com. Producer shout-outs for anyone who spreads the love, supports, gives WOM or financial support in the form of a karmic exchange. These videos operate on a value-for-value model.https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=Y94D6MGHZK6KJ&source=url
Thank you and thinking of you.

Moving Within Yoga in the Days Without - The Quads, #21

4/11/2020

The whole point of Move Within Yoga was helping others cultivate the ability to find the joy within, to find the strength within, and to find the creativity within. To find your power within, without relying on anyone or anything else, is empowering. Little did I ever foresee the ability and discipline to "move within" would be a need on such a collective scale.

We can also move within and observe our body, our muscles, our joints, and the beating of our hearts. In this video, we pay attention to our Quads, which are essential for the most basic of movement whether in sports or everyday life: stepping forward.

We begin with a moving meditation, developing strength and flexibility in the Quads through Little Dancer, and moving through Sun Salutation.

Any comments please send to movewithinyoga@gmail.com.

If you find this or any other video here on my YouTube channel of value, please consider a karmic exchange of sorts - Word of Mouth, Subscribe, Like, Share and Care. Caring comes in lots of ways and earns you a producer credit.

Move Within Yoga in the Days Without - The Shoulders! #20

4/10/2020

Move Within Yoga in-these-days-without wants to emphasize to all my students -- my teenagers too -- that we need relationships. Social distancing in my opinion is an odious term and doesn't mean getting rid of relationships. It means re-evaluating what relationships mean the most and cultivating them. We need each other. We need our feelings to flow freely with even just a few people in our lives who we can share with freedom.

It's incumbent we go within and find people and activities to get excited about!  Our lives may be constricted but we can still move, love, live and laugh. In fact, it is essential each of us find what we love and look for people to help us get excited about life, not matter how restrictive the bars might be and this invisible enemy is.

This short sequence puts particular emphasis on your shoulders, and helps with the action of throwing - a movement for so many sports as well as for everyday functionality.

We start with a moving meditation, do an exercise tailored toward shoulder mobility, and then pay particular heed as we do a Sun Salutation with a special surprise pose that again utilizes what we just worked. You can repeat the Sun Salutation long after the video ended if you want more cardiovascular.

Any comments please send to movewithinyoga@gmail.com.

Yoga for Hamstrings, Move Within Yoga #19

4/8/2020

I developed this with my teenage students in mind, but this is for anyone trapped in the house who wants to condition their muscles. Hamstrings form a key muscle group, and keeping them both flexible and strong are essential.

We start with a moving meditation, exercise these muscles, and then pay particular heed as we do a Sun Salutation with a special surprise pose that again utilizes what we just worked. You can repeat the Sun Salutation long after the video ended if you want more cardiovascular.

Lock-down mode is making us appreciate so much these days and one of those is exercise and movement.

Any comments please send to movewithinyoga@gmail.com.
