Naked Yoga

A co-ed naked yoga studio recently opened in New York City.  We have sweaty yoga-in-saunas, yoga with ropes, yoga in resorts, under palm trees, in nightclubs while Voguing. Now without clothes at all. What next? Slathering yourself in oil? Yoga for the Anointed. If your foot keeps sliding off your spandex in tree pose, just wait until your thigh is covered in extra virgin Spanish olive oil.

Its website says that naked yoga "frees you from negative feelings about your body." If anything, it might be the opposite. Naked yoga would draw those who already feel ab fab in the first place, or those who work yoga into their cross-training sports regimes. Naked yoga would validate all those hours huffing and pumping in gyms. Clothes only hide muscle tone! Those who've suffered illness or injury don't just feel negative about their body image, they're trying to recover from traumas, fears and deep insecurities.

Their website goes on: naked yoga "allows for a deeper connection with yourself and the world around you." Why limit yourself to the world? How about the universe? How about: Yoga in Space! Without gravity, you'd be freed from negative feelings about your body, too. No sagging or drooping. Outer space might, just might, smooth out cellulite.

Yoga is a means to enrich our everyday lives, not an end in and of itself. Props and frills can be fun, but they don't make too much difference whether your inner self starts to awaken. The capacity for senses to become more acute, for old energy to clear, and the breath and body to truly relax can be done just as easily in blue jeans waiting for dinner to cook.

Everything

We've all been there. What's going on 'out there' -- in the atmosphere, in our immediate environment -- doesn't match at all with what we're feeling on the inside. The flow between what's going on within and the outside world is broken or in disharmony.

We can either ignore this imbalance, suppress the discomfort, and go through the motions, pretending and acting through life. Or, sometimes, when the outside-inside dynamic leaves us feeling particularly alienated or in shock, we have no choice but to turn inwards. The stronger the crisis, the deeper we're forced to move within, to confront our feelings and emotional triggers; all our beliefs and judgments that are boxed around our true self.

This video shows this disconnect (a woman is clubbing, but she doesn't really hear the music, has a hard time dancing), but also the ease with which her body, soul and spirit finally move into alignment. Life flows and becomes energized when the woman's soul moves in sync, in harmony, with her physical body and then when her soul connects with universal spirit. She becomes whole, complete unto herself, everything. Even if only for a moment.

Aside from all that, I just really love this re-mix by British DJ Ben Westbeech aka Breach. And well done to Jordan, my dance teacher with AJK Dance in London, who wore all those morph suits!

Atoms and Everything

Most of us are material girls, and boys, living in a material world. And it's so out of whack with the nature of the universe -- 95% of which is dark matter and dark  energy.

All this stuff around us: steel railroad tracks, the ice in our drink, the bricks in our home, the cars along curbs, the sofa we're sitting on, planet Earth, all this stuff we rely and depend upon -- all this is just a fraction of the universe. This atomic world is only 5% of it. The universe, of which we are part of, is mostly energy.

Yet, how often do we approach life and the other as energetic forces? Aren't we lulled and lured, totally preoccupied, by this hot, atomic world for its solidity and stability? Atoms 'make up everything', each carries an enormous space and is in constant flux and movement. How trustworthy are our five senses in observing all this stuff around us? How often do we tap into our intuition and primal awareness when dealing with energy from others? In yoga, we work with energy in our seven major chakras, the organs of our soul, as much as we do our bodies.
